And I mean that in a literal sense. Due to wild santa ana winds, its hotter right now near work than it is in Death Valley. You know, the place known for it’s 120+ degree weather and desert climate ? Versus coastal Ventura County, known for its 65-70 degree summers and Mediterranean climate .
I only had looked this up because I am trying to make a trip to Death Valley this winter since I havent been yet and it would probably be some nice winter camping there. Just found this peculiarity of California weather interesting.
For some reference:

SF has been super warm this week, too. I love it but then the fires start and it’s not as fun anymore

Yeah this is bullshit. It’s 96 in SLO right now and I have a road rally this weekend that my aircooled car is going to be pissed about.

Trump needs to stop worrying about California. It will burn itself up soon enough.

Stay not-on-fire down there.
Also, k
eep in mind when you’re planning your trip that Death Valley NP is huge and a lot of it is mountains...even the
desert part
s
aren’t
hot all year, and it
cools
off fast at night in the winter. For my money,
a
lot of the
best
camping is up
in the mountainside
canyons. For example,
I’ve camped there in March
,
when it was
pleasant
during the day but
well
below freezing overnight, not even all that high up
. It’s great in winter
as long as you know what you’re getting into and choose your campsite accordingly.

Fire is definitely the large concern today! Weather this dry and winds that high are bound to start something. This morning it was almost like a giant dust storm driving past the farms.
And yeah my plan would probably be to keep it simple and camp down in Furnace Creek and exploring the mountainous areas during the day. Considering I just went backpacking in ~20F overnight weather, I should be alright car camping in likely warmer stuff. I would try to go in conjunction with a ski trip to mammoth most likely so ill be plenty used to cold and winter. Just seems like an extremely interesting place. I really quite enjoyed Joshua Tree so desert landscapes are definitely something I want to see more of.

I believe the winds should die down by then and maybe it will be a bit nicer I would imagine!

Its funny because this is normal everyday temperatures at home for me in the summer time. Just the wind that is wild to me and im used to being cold in the summer here so its weird being almost November.

It’s damn hot up here in the SF Bay. 10k acre fire overnight in Sonoma. The weird thing is how dry it is. 90F with 12% humidity. It’s still breezy and feels like you’re in a convection oven. You feel the liquid being sucked from your body. I just took a 5 mile walk and didn’t sweat.
We had a fire nearby in Richmond today. How great are things up here? So great that the police get called to protect the fire crews from homeless people.

Oh you definitely did sweat, it just evaporated immediately. Hence why plenty of water is advised to be drank in dry conditions.

Yeah, hit 90 a bit ago here in Santa Barbara.
It’s hard to explain to relatives back in the midwest, when we’re gloating that it’s July Fourth seeing 72 degrees here in SB while they have 102/98 in Des Moines. Then on New Year’s Day (we always take a run up the Crest as a tradition with a fine feast in Flintridge to welcome the New year) we report 72 degrees again when its 22 BELOW in Des Moines.
Given that fact pattern it’s hard to explain why we get temps in the 90s out here when the pumpkins are freezing in the rest of the country headed into November.

Lompoc is my litmus test. It’s always 20 degrees colder there in the AM than it is down here in SB... with the ocean breeze and fog and weird geography
It’s 93 up there right now. Ugh. But still supposed to be well down in the 40s tonight. Go figger.

It comes with the caveat of you get fires, earthquakes, and questionable politics along with it. Its a package deal.
